Ryerson University POLC Framework & Management Functions and Leading HW
Im working on a English question and need guidance to help me study.
PAPER ON MANAGEMENT the PLANNING, ORGANIZING, LEADING, CONTROLLING FRAMEWORK (POLC).
Do this assignment on your own, prepare a paper on one of the functions of management under the POLC framework.
Each group will select an individual function from the framework (P, O, L, or C).
You are to research what is included in the function. What does it entail for management, what is its purpose and significance? How does it connect to the other three functions? Also, provide two examples that illustrate how managers would vary their approach/execution of the function for two distinct industries/sub-industries. An example for this would be analyzing and describing how a function would be handled differently if you were setting up a software development business in contrast to an event planning business.
Here is a resource to get you started:
Under the framework – P is for Planning
The process begins with environmental scanning
There are many different types of plans and planning.
Strategic planning
Tactical planning
Operational planning
O for Organizing
Decisions made about the nature of jobs within the organization are generally called job design decisions.
Organizing at the level of the organization involves deciding how best to departmentalize, or cluster, jobs into departments to coordinate effort effectively. There are many different ways to departmentalize, including organizing by function, product, geography, or customer. Many larger organizations use multiple methods of departmentalization.
Organizing at the level of a particular job involves how best to design individual jobs to most effectively use human resources.
Traditionally, job design is the process of putting together various elements to form a job, bearing in mind organizational and individual worker requirements. was based on principles of division of labor and specialization, which assumed that the more narrow the job content, the more proficient the individual performing the job could become.
Job enrichment is a job redesign technique that allows workers more control over how they perform their own tasks. It may involve teamwork. Cooperative effort by the members of a group or team to achieve a common goal. For example, HUI Manufacturing, a custom sheet metal fabricator, has done away with traditional departments to focus on listening and responding to customer needs. From company-wide meetings to team huddles, HUI employees know and understand their customers and how HUI might service them best.
Leading
Leading involves the social and informal sources of influence that you use to inspire action taken by others. If managers are effective leaders, their subordinates will be enthusiastic about exerting effort to attain organizational objectives.
Controlling
Controlling involves ensuring that performance does not deviate from standards. Controlling consists of three steps, which include (1) establishing performance standards, (2) comparing actual performance against standards, and (3) taking corrective action when necessary. Performance standards are often stated in monetary terms such as revenue, costs, or profits but may also be stated in other terms, such as units produced, number of defective products, or levels of quality or customer service.
Key Takeaway
The principles of management include four critical functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. This P-O-L-C framework provides useful guidance for common managerial roles.
Separately, please respond to these questions
In addition to the paper, please answer the questions below.

- Alone or in a group, imagine that you are redesigning an organization to maximize its flexibility. How would you design the planning, organization, leadership, and control aspects of this organization?
- Now imagine that you are redesigning an organization to maximize its cost effectiveness. Which of the four P-O-L-C aspects would you most focus on and why?
- There are several types of control, can you identify and briefly describe them?
- Finally, imagine you are hoping to create a highly creative organization to invent new products and processes. In this scenario, how would you emphasize each of the P-O-L-C aspects to best ensure you were creating an environment where ideas could thrive?
