Thesis

Synthesis theses come in many different forms, but the important thing is that they are original and argumentative. They should not simply state a fact; they should argue for an action or combine multiple, disparate ideas.

Synthesis theses will most often occur towards the end of the introduction. The important thing for their location is they should be presented before any sources are analyzed so that your own ideas are the focus of the essay.

Structure

Although there are many ways to structure a synthesis essay, like our Joining the Conversation projects, there are two strategies that are most common in successful student essays.

Structure 2

• Introduction: Hook, thesis, forecasting)
• Body Paragraphs
  • Source 1: summary and explanation of how this articles relates to your thesis
  • Source 2: summary and explanation of how this articles relates to your thesis
  • Source 3: summary and explanation of how this articles relates to your thesis
  • Source 4: summary and explanation of how this articles relates to your thesis
• Conclusion: Transition, thesis, clincher

Structure 2 is very similar to research papers or annotated bibliographies that some of you have written previously. Each section of the body paragraphs is devoted to summarizing and analyzing a single source and explaining how its data supports your thesis. As you work towards this second draft, keep in mind the citation strategies we have discussed as well. Any time you are giving a quote, number, or piece of important data from a source, make sure that source is properly credited with an in-text citation (or attributive tag), including the author’s name and page number, such as:

At this point in the development of your essay, you have all the necessary material to finish your draft 3, including your thesis, sources, supporting points, and structure.

For this draft, I recommend focusing on balance and coherence. Make sure that the body paragraphs produced towards the end of your essay have the same development and attention to detail that the first few paragraphs did. Rushing through the last few paragraphs can often leave an easy seeming lopsided or poorly edited.

And finally, don’t forget your clincher! Like your hook, this is one of the places where we can have a big impact on our audience. Although we aren’t presenting new or argumentative ideas here, find a way to be dramatic or impactful to keep your essay in your audience’s mind after they have finished reading.
