NYU Arabic Literature Traits of An Arab Writer Al Jahiz & the Uses of Paradoxes Essay
Question Description
This is a very easy essay. I need a close reading on the author (Al-Jahiz) through his work( The Epistle of Singing Girl). Where you look at the authors work and pull from the text things that show something significant. For my essay I would like evidence from the text about three traits or personas that showcase what an Arab writer looks like or what complicates the Arab writers role.
Preferred traits are: well traveled, historian, well knowledge about Islam and the Quran, observer, sociable (especially with Caliphs and nobles), objective (where he doesnt take a stance) or is he not objective?
I have already prepared an outline and will provide three texts. 1 to help establish the definition or what defines a good man civilized man according to a Caliph (means ruler) in the Letter to secretaries text. 2 the work of the author that you will close read. 3 a secondary text to help analyze. But you dont need to depend of the secondary text too much, you can refer back to the definition established (the first text).
Include this definition in the essay: The Arab writer, The Adeeb is the civilized one or the one who is born out of Adab, civility. Thus the role of an Adeeb is more elevated than the mere role of a writer. Many Arab writers have emerged that further complicate this role without boundaries.
