I’m working on a history writing question and need a sample draft to help me learn.

America in the World

In our last unit, we examined the United States’ role in the world from 1898 to the present. In your final exam, you need to explain what role the United States should take relative to the rest of the world.

Main question:

“What role should the United States take relative to the rest of the world?”

Sub- question:

* Should America mind its own business and focus on itself, or does America have a special role to play in the world?If so, what is that role and how should it be performed?

Present your answer to that question at the end of the first paragraph.

Specifications:

In a three-to-five page typewritten double-spaced paper using Times New Roman 12 point font with one-inch margins on all four sides, answer the following general question: “What role should the United States take relative to the rest of the world?”

The best way to tackle such a question is to choose a sub-question and structure your answer around that sub-question. Many books have been written on this topic and the amount of territory one can discuss in a three-to-five page paper is limited. So choose a sub-question and provide your answer to the sub-question at the end of the first paragraph.

Your answer needs to be grounded in primary and secondary materials. You do not need to cite PowerPoints, but if you use any of the written and video sources that I provided, you need to cite them both in-text and in a list of works cited. Be sure to use page numbers with your in-text citations (When the sample in-text citation uses “page #,” you need to provide the appropriate page number.). Furthermore, you need to alphabetize your list of works cited. (Do not factor in “a,” “an,” and “the” when alphabetizing.)

This is not a research paper. You need to use at least three of the materials listed below, all of which were assigned in this class. You must use either Art Spiegelman’s Maus or Phil Klay’s Redeployment and if you use both, great! You do not need to cite materials from the PowerPoints, but other readings and videos need to be cited both in-text and on a List of Works Cited. You may use outside materials as a supplement, not a replacement for the three sources that come from this class.
