Santa Monica College Have You Ever Felt Unrestrained Anger Essay
Question Description
For this assignment, you will be turning in a single document with two elements. First, you will be writing a 3-5 page personal essay with any focus that you choose, using one of our essays as a guide in terms of three major elements: structure, language, and style. Second, you will be writing a one page critical explanation of your approach and how you utilized your chosen essay as a guide. This should be rooted in analytical language, showing that you did some critical reading, annotating, and discussing of your chosen essay in order to inform your own work.
If you reference or cite additional sources in YOUR essay, you will need to also include a works cited page. If you only reference your chosen essay in the critical response page, you don’t need to worry about it.
While this is a personal essay, the overall presentation of it is still academic. Even a travel essay (“Bloodsport”) goes beyond a simple diary or journal entry, as the author Liz Blood examines masculinity, violence, and death in the midst of another cultural experience. Your language can shift a bit towards style and away from the “academic essay,” but you should be in control of your language; informal language should only be used as a necessary element of the story, dialogue needs to be properly punctuated, and observations or meditations should be examined and informed, not surface-level and fleeting. This is an academic exercise, so make sure your final product reflects that.
