American Intercontinental University Writing a Research Review Article Summary

I don’t know how to handle this Psychology question and need guidance.

Annotated bibliographies are more than just a summary of an article but rather an evaluation or critique of the authors perspective of key points in the research. This process requires skills to assess the usefulness of the article and an explanation of the content for relevance to the problem being studied (Cornell University Library 2015). Researchers should always look for quality in literature and relate the articles contribution to the research so that it could inform readers of the accuracy and validity of the study (Stadtlander 2015).

I found that there were so many articles depending on key words entered in the search engine and therefore, the articles that I selected in week 4 had to be skimmed to make sure they were representative of the topic of challenges that adult learner face in online learning.

Background: Massive open online courses (MOOCs) indicates that many learners do not succeed in pursuing their personal learning goals due to barriers. The balance between work and family in online learning has been challenging for early and mid-life adults with a lower educational level, lack of knowledge (technology) and difficulty with content that may be reflective of age, gender and education.

Method: 18 MOOCs were used with pre and post course surveys that included several general questions on gender, age, educational background, employment status, and online learning experience. The pre survey had the number of MOOC’s taken and the post survey had 19 barriers listed.

  • Principal Result 1: Learners aged 20–35 and 35–50 experienced a greater number of barriers in general and were also more likely to face barriers specifically related to work and family.
  • Principal Result 2: Female learners face more barriers in general than men and more often come across barriers related to work-life balance than men.
  • Principal Results 3: Learners with a higher educational level experienced the barriers less frequently than learners with a lower educational level who often indicated that they found the course content too hard and technology difficult to use.
  • Implications: Based on the study, it is challenging to combine work and family life with (online) learning activities, especially for certain age groups because of barriers such as family issues, work issues, lack of time, insu?cient academic knowledge, and course content too hard. The barriers are related to the individual and cannot be changed by re-designing online courses. Educators need only be aware that barriers could hinder the learning process.
