Assignment Details
Lifespan Development
In this discussion, you will discuss social transitions and the rites of passage that adolescents go through to “achieve” adulthood. Common in the United States are graduation, turning a certain age (16, 18, or 21), getting a driver’s license, and moving out of the parents’ home. Religious and culturally specific ceremonies might include Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Christenings, and Quinceaneras.
- List 1 major rite of passage or event that you have experienced that marked your transition from one stage to another (for example, childhood to adolescence or adolescence to adulthood). Describe the following:
- Key features of this event
- The effects those features had on your transition
- The degree to which this rite of passage is universal in the United States
- What is 1 common social transition (rite of passage) that an individual may go through between late adulthood and death? Describe the following:
- Key features of this event
- The effects those features have on the transition
- The degree to which this rite of passage is universal in the United States
- Research and describe 1 rite of passage for any life stage from a culture different from yours.
- When replying to at least 2 peers, consider comparing your experiences to others’ and to other cultural rites of passage.
When writing your posts, mention ideas or strategies from the assigned readings, videos, or intellipath® lessons. This will help you write better posts, and it is a required part of this assignment.
