Once a practice question is identified, the next step is to create a framework for finding evidence to answer the question. Practice or research questions may be developed using the PICOT format, which encompasses the following elements:

I: identifies an Intervention or treatment

O: identifies measurable Outcomes

T: specifies Timeframe for investigating influence and impact upon identified outcomes

• Example: time it takes for the intervention to achieve the outcome, ortime over which populations are observed for the outcome to occur given a certain condition
