I’m trying to learn for my Computer Science class and I’m stuck. Can you help?

As you know, a Windows 2016 Server installation supports many roles for you to employ. You can turn them on and off by using checkboxes in the “Add Roles and Features Wizard.”

  1. Given the ease of selecting roles for your server, do you think you should install all the roles so that you are prepared for any contingency? Why or why not? What are some advantages and disadvantages to installing them all? Dangers?
  2. What is a way you might use PowerShell? How can it help you with adding roles for your server?

Roles provide a method to define the utilization types a server has available. These roles are necessary to properly utilize a server for the desired use cases, whether it is to be simply a file server, a print server, or a web server. Typically to act in a specific type of role, a server may require additional features that need to be installed in order to best perform that role.

Powershell is a very handy tool. Powershell not only helps in performing actions in bulk but also helps in saving the time it takes to perform the same set of actions using GUI tools. Powershell can be used to manage roles and features on Window Servers, While you can use Server Manager to connect to a remote Windows Server and then perform the installation and uninstallation of Windows Server roles and features using Server Manager might take a considerable amount of time.

Personally I do not think installing ALL roles is a good idea. I would only install roles that the server is supposed to fulfill. You will get more efficient use of the resources if you only install what is need. installing everything could potentially slow everything to a crawl. I would rather do it this way myelf but the disadvantage is, if a new role is needed it will not be immediately available.

PowerShell is a task based command line shell used for system administration. It helps control and automate Windows.

There are few ways to use PowerShell

1. you can report off usbs installed

2. perform CMD tasks in PowerShell (Ip look ups, traceroutes, etc)

3.Instead of task manager you can kill processes with PowerShell

4. Export NTFS folder permissions

You can manage server roles with PowerShell also.
