TED Talks
About one in three people in their life has already experienced or will face panic attacks at least once. Anyone who has ever been through this or seen something like this, would not want to repeat it again or experience it for themselves. Panic attacks can really change the usual life of many people. That is why it is necessary to fight them, and the first step in the fight is to understand what panic attacks really are. I chose this video because it is accessible and clearly reveals the meaning of what panic attacks are from the point of view of the physiology of the human body and what are the ways to fight them. According to the definition given by the lecturer, a panic attack is an overreaction of our brain to a potential danger, which stimulates an excessive release of adrenaline, which affects the purity of heart muscle contractions and brain activity. Panic attacks are short-lived, however, this does not reduce their impact. Only one attack can cause fear of its repetition, which can lead to the development of panic disorder, OCD, or social anxiety disorder. At the moment, there are two ways to deal with panic attacks. The first of them – taking antidepressants – is not effective enough for a long-term effect, since about half of patients relapse after the end of the course of medications, which does not help to improve the situation, but can only worsen it. The second method – cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT – focuses on psychological work with patients. The purpose of this method is to work on mental control and perception of situations-triggers that can cause a panic attack. However, this method also involves explaining the physiological causes and working on preparing for an attack, such as practicing breathing exercises. It also includes cognitive restructuring, which in the future allows patients to realize that they are not dying, but only seized with an uncontrollable panic during an attack. Despite the fact that both of these methods do have a positive effect on patients, the likelihood of panic attacks is not significantly reduced. However, it is important to understand that fear or panic alone can not cause serious harm. According to patient surveys, the worst period is the moment of the first panic attack, as there is no understanding of what is happening and how it can be stopped. This is why I hope that this video will help you better understand the nature and process of panic attacks, as understanding and analyzing is the first step in the fight against this disease.
