Unionized nurses are nurses who belong to a trade or labor organizations that protect the welfare of nurses and support the enhancement of the healthcare system. Nurses should be given a chance to join unions at will (Gaines,2019). Workplace unions range from small to national labor organization developed specifically to address issues in healthcare organizations. Nurses’ unions come with many benefits. For instance, the unions resolve matters relating to nurses’ welfare including fair wages, staff ratios, job security, benefits, and patient rights. Nurse comprise a significant proportion of the healthcare industry budget, making them suitable target during economic restructuring. Besides, the huge budget for nurses leads to workforce shortages and unusual staffing ratios. Nurses’ unions campaign for motivational benefits such as dental and medical insurance, sick pay, educational leave, and vacation (Gaines,2019). Therefore, unions are important in enhancing nurses’ safety via negotiating for worker protection benefits, better wages, and against unfair retrenchments and terminations.
Additionally, unions play a critical role in advocating for a culture of patient safety. For instance, advocating for the right staffing ratios focuses on the patients’ interest. Appropriate staffing ration is critical in enhancing patient care and outcome since nurses can make proper follow ups. Besides, educational leave allows lifelong learning, which helps to strengthen the skills of a nurse and thus the quality of safety and health of patients. One of the MSN essentials is healthy policy and advocacy (Gaines,2019). Nurses’ unions empower nurses to engage in advocacy relating patient safety while seeking change in practices that are associated with patient diet, rights, and hygiene. In summary, unions play an important role for both nurses and patients. They provide nurses with strength in number that can be used to advocate for patient and nurse safety.
