Question Description

PART 2 Paper Structure Reporting of data

Observation Paper Structure/Isaura Pulido FA20

For each Observation Section, you will be asked to write about both the objective and subjective reporting of the specific student behaviors/characteristics that will be generated from the data collected on your Observation Form and an analysis of what you have observed.

Label each new observation as Observation 1, Observation 2, etc. At the beginning of each new observation, in paragraph form describe the following information:

1) Your research question:

2) Title of the episode;

3) 1-paragraph summary of the episode

4) Questions

5) Specific observations related to your question: Please note that when you jot down observations related to your overarching question(s) you need to provide the specific context in which those observations occurred. This means explaining details about what was happening? Who was present? Description of the classroom? Information about the physical space? Behaviors you observed? What you expected to see from the students/teachers and what you actually saw?

Now, begin to summarize your data by simply writing about the objective data that you have collected from your form. For example, “During the first half of the class, the male students participated more than the females by shouting out their answers to the teacher. In the second half of the class, the female students participated more than the males by raising their hands in response to the teacher’s questions.”

After the objective reporting of your data, state your subjective discussion notes/personal thoughts for each Observation Section. Support your subjective thoughts with concrete examples For example, “Female students seem to be less willing to engage in the teacher’s lessons. X only responded when called on by the teacher.”

End each Observation Section with a summary of your findings. Did your expectations of the behaviors that you expected to see from the students/subjects differ from what actually occurred?

Analysis

In this section you should link student behavior observed with theories that we have learned in class and the broader educational research literature. How could you link these behaviors to Piaget, Erickson or Vygotsky? Does culture or gender or race/ethnicity or socio-economics influence/shape the students’ behaviors? You are to use your textbook, lecture notes and research articles to show that you understand the material and to make these sections strong. Each of these sources must be cited in the body of the paper. Connect observation data to theory/research related to development we have learned about (e.g. cognitive, emotional, identity, physical, etc.). For example, where applicable, you are required to support your thoughts by using theories of students’ learning, physical, social, emotional, intellectual, cultural, ethical, and/or cognitive development. The analysis must also include a minimum of 3 additional peer reviewed articles that further inform your analysis (this section MUST include data from theorists/researchers from course readings AND your independent research on the topic).

Conclusion

In this section you will evaluate your experience and describe what you concluded from the overall observation process. What did you like/dislike about this process? What would you do differently next time? How did what you learned inform your perspective on children’s development in relation to learning? In what ways do various factors (e.g. gender, race, ability, etc.) impact student learning?

Implications

How does the observation paper experience influence your understanding of teaching and learning? How will you use this information in your future teaching?

References

List all the resources used to write the paper. One reference will be the Illinois State Board of Education’s website and the other may be to class readings. Additionally, you will need to have a minimum of 3 additional peer-reviewed research articles that help you understand what you observed and how it connects to the larger educational field, these will come from the

references that you obtained from the library and/or internet. You are to use American Psychological Association (APA) format for this and all assignments for this course.—THE APA MANUAL IS AVAILABLE IN THE LIBRARY AT THE REFERENCE DESK. You can also meet virtually with a librarian to provide you guidance on APA format (both in the body of the paper and for the reference page).
