Although this is a short read adapted from Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow (see Modules Week 1 – The Birth of Slavery), the contents of the reading is vitally important as we move through the beginning of the colonial period and slavery in America. For this assignment you are to express your thoughts on the questions below:

What is the author’s argument (summarize briefly but thoroughly)? What motive (purpose) might the author have for writing on this subject (example: persuade, entertain, inform)? Explain.
Give four (4) major points or arguments that support the author’s argument.
From your perspective what is the historical significance and does this document contribute to your understanding of this historical period? Explain thoroughly.
What were you able to take away from the reading – discuss at least four (4) thought provoking moments.
