Aims
-To enhance the student’s practical knowledge and skills on the high power transmission system and related technical issues.
-Assessment of condition monitoring of high voltage power system components particularly with aging of power plant and its’ sub-systems.
Learning Outcomes
• Outline the process of design, commissioning and testing of HV plant and the mechanisms which stress power plant and systems under typical in-service conditions
• Evaluate for a given condition monitoring strategy, the specific instrumentation to be used and the associated measurement strategy
OVERVIEW:
One of engineering leaders of power sector in Oman, Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) as on today 2019, the monopoly provider of transmission services prepares to embark on a significant qualitative and quantitative enhancement of the Main Interconnected Transmission System, which is the vital lifeline of the Sultanate’s power infrastructure.
OETC’s strategic objective and goal is to operate, maintain and develop a robust and technically sound power transmission grid that is well geared to meeting the rapidly expanding energy requirements of Oman while meeting the regulatory stipulations. It is heartening to note that OETC is highly successful in meeting these challenges till now and must continue to do so in future also. {Reference: www.omangrid.com}.
TASK 1: Design of HV Power System Component
Select and name the location in Oman for ANY 66kV/132kV/220kV high voltage AC transmission line has FIVE suspension type insulators having 99% capacitive nature with standard voltage withstanding capacity. Other details of the HV line are tabulated in Table 1.
Note: I’ve uploaded table 1 in word file named “Table 1”.
Design FIVE insulators carrying the 66kV/132kV/220kV line voltage under steady-state-condition, which can withstanding more voltage and less leakage current. Further assess the various precautions, physical properties, suitability and examine under practical condition how to develop an even distribution of potential gradient across the length of the insulator string in the vicinity of the line conductor. Furthermore, identify how many units will fail as per standard voltage withstanding capacity of each insulator.
