    Tony Hsieh at Zappos: Structure, Culture & Change

    Important characteristics of a manager are the ability to solve complex problems, partner, collaborate, negotiate, and work with others within an organization in order to achieve a common goal. To stimulate this real world environment, students will analyze the impact of varying organizational decisions and dynamics on employee and management behavior through the analysis of this case study.

    Objectives:

    1. Understand the impact between culture and structure

    2. Examine organizational change from the perspective of the leader

    3. Analyze the role of culture in developing an organization’s competitive edge

    4. Evaluate the role of leadership in the context of organizational change

    5. Understand the purpose and impact of structure on those within an organization

    QUESTIONS TO GUIDE GROUP DISCUSSION AND DECISION (use only as guidelines):

    1. Would you want to work in a place like Zappos before the transition to halocracy? How about after? Why or why not?
