SVA Against the Synthetic Portrait for The Snapshot History of Photography Essay

Question Description

Readings: Pick and respond to one reading from each set of links (2 in total)

Everyone not presenting this week, including Luna, should pick one essay from the following excerpts from Photography in the Modern Era (there are 2 separate links for readings in this group of readings but you only need to write about one excerpt; all the excerpts are very short): ManRay_Patzsch_Rodchenko_ModernEra.pdf or MaholyNagy.pdf

and

one excerpt from Hal Foster’s Art Since 1900 (again, all the excerpts are very short): Class 6 Art Since 1900 Finalb.pdf

The excerpts you can choose from in Foster are pp.160-165, 174-179, 180-185, 191-195, 196-201, 220-223, 250-254, 258-262, 263-266, and 295-298. This book was difficult to scan and the page numbers are sometimes obscured, so look at the page previous or following if you can’t read the number on a specific page.

Write a paragraph for each of the two readings you choose (title each with the essay or excerpt title and page numbers) describing one of the main ideas of each essay or excerpt that interested you, what you think about it, and why you chose it. You should have at least a full page of writing total not including illustrations. Please include a labeled illustration for your selection from Foster, Art Since 1900 (titled with maker, title, date, and print type or other medium). Put all quotations in quotes but put as much in your own words as possible and be sure to include the page numbers in parenthesis of the parts of the article you are referring to as you write.
