UBT The Clergy Sexual Scandal Discussion Questions

UBT The Clergy Sexual Scandal Discussion Questions

I’m stuck on a Philosophy question and need an explanation.

1-Watch the New York Times mini-documentary “Shame of the Catholic Church” (2014): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jW–S9Ddws4w

How does the documentary frame the abuse scandal? Draw on Lytton’s discussion of frame analysis and details from the documentary.

(At least 100 words)

2- Locate any media sample that seeks to explain, make sense of, dramatize, or simply report clergy abuse in general or a specific case. It might be a new story, sermon, documentary, movie/tv episode, or any genre. How does this media sample frame the clergy abuse scandal?

(At least 300 words)

3-How would you explain to a friend why some priests sexually abused children based on Rossetti, A Tragic Grace, chap. 4 and Keenan, Clergy Sex Abuse, chap. 8 (both on Blackboard)?

(At least 200 words)

4- Imagine you are a public relations consultant to the Catholic Church either now or at some past moment (e.g., the start of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd waves of the scandal). How would you recommend that the Church respond to the publicity surrounding lawsuits? This response might involve offering alternative frames or accepting the institutional failure frame and responding differently. (at least 250 words)

5-Consider (1) the 21 reflection points developed for the Catholic bishops meeting in Rome and (2) the best practices developed by the Baylor University research team and (3) to Rossetti, “Learning from Our Mistakes.” Compare any two of these things to each other. How are these recommendations similar and different? Does one strike you are better than the other? Or put another way: Which document would you recommend for Church leaders to read and why? (at least 300 words)

6-Consider the information summarized by Lytton (Holding Bishops Accountable p. 85-86) about how news media decide what makes a story “newsworthy”. Do these considerations help explain why news coverage of suicide and mass shootings often violate the guidelines we reviewed early in the semester? (at least 200 words)
