Essay Prompt:
In Candide, Voltaire is critiquing his contemporary society through the satiric travels, trials, and tribulations of the title character. Discuss the various targets of his criticism and specifically the issues he ridicules (philosophy, government, aristocracy, warfare, sexual politics, etc.). Are Voltaire’s critiques still valid in contemporary American society and culture? Be sure to cite specific passages and examples to illustrate and support your views.
